why frida

Because she would scratch her pain raw and turn it into a bleeding sunflower. Screaming beauty on parade.

Because she was an addict: a refined, intense consumer. And look, you can get Frida on postcards, keychains, giftcards, books. Frida for everyone.

Because an old Cuban professor told me I look like her. But I'd only ever seen her self-portraits. Then he gave me a poster advertising an exhibit with the title Pasión por Frida. But there was no passion there: it was dull, with a black and white photograph of a grieving Frida, young and solemn before the camera.

There, you couldn't guess there were such fractures. Only that they ran very, very long.
